All the news on Bluegrass in the Mid Island area of Vancouver Island and beyond
covering Jams, Concerts and Festivals and making Bluegrass Connections

Welcome to the the MIBS Newsletter.  We hope you enjoy the content and information, all about Bluegrass, and the bluegrass family of MIBS (Mid Island Bluegrass Society).

MIBS is the newest Bluegrass Club on Vancouver Island, and one of the greatest little clubs in BC.  Each month, on the 2nd Sunday, MIBS gets together for an open stage event in the Lighthouse Community Centre , followed by a jam session in an adjacent room.

The Open Stage starts at 10:00am, to 12:00 noon, and all levels of bluegrassers are welcome to participate – your best support groups are the fellow bluegrassers at the club.  If you want to try a new song, a new lick, or a new instrument, then with your fellow club members to back you up, wade in and do ‘your bluegrass thing’.  Contact Linda Thorburn (Banjo Linda) to sign up and get a time and set list you wish to do.

During the Open Stage, there is a pancake breakfast, (put on by local community groups) flea market, swap meet and other novelty tables selling their wares, creating a warm atmosphere in the hall.

The Jam session starts around 12:30pm and runs about 2 hours, so there’s lots of time during the ‘round robin’ to learn new songs, play with other members, meet new members, and ask questions pertaining to bluegrass and the instruments.

The main purpose for issuing the newsletters is to spread the word to all member bluegrassers and other bluegrass clubs about what our club is and has been doing over the last month in a quick and easy format.

We encourage input from all club members that can be included in these newsletters, and also create a forum where questions and answers pertaining to MIBS and bluegrass in general can be aired.  Links and references can be included to help convey information, learning tips, buy and sell info, etc. will also be included so the MIBS Newsletters can be a quick and easy ‘one stop shop’ for members.

Don’t forget,
the 2nd Sunday of each month is

mark your calendar, NOVEMBER 13TH, because the dates on the calendar are closer than they appear, and we would love to see everyone there.

Cheers, until next month,

1/ - The first MIBS meeting was held just prior to the open jam, and results of the first Annual MIBS Bluegrass Festival was reviewed.  Lots of positive feedback, and encouragement was noted.  Kudos to all those members who acted as volunteers to build the stage, arrange the site, coerced Mother Nature, handled the vendors sites, parking, and on and on, too many to name individually, but you all know who you are, and the festival wouldn’t have been such a success if it hadn’t been for your help.

2/ - On Thursday evenings at 7:00pm to 10:00pm is a bluegrass jam at the Crown and Anchor Pub in Qualicum Bay, hosted by Angie. ~click HERE for more info~  The Pub provides the sound system, and lighting and a relaxed atmosphere for all of us to get up, play and do our ‘bluegrass thing’.  There is no sign up or formalities other than bring your instrument(s), order a drink, enjoy some ‘good old country cookin’ from the kitchen and enjoy the music.  Beginners and experts alike

3/ - Planning is already underway for the 2nd MIBS Annual Bluegrass Festival, and volunteers are once again needed to insure the success of another fantastic event.  More information about this wonderful event is available on the Lighthouse Bluegrass Web Site.
